How I came to write the song Mother Teresa
All my life, my mother talked to me about the lives of the saints. My mom was raised Catholic and attended school at St. Mary's. She said she was going to be a nun until she met my dad. They went steady in senior high and after graduation Mom enrolled in nursing school, only to be kicked out for poor grades. She and Dad married.
Dad went into the service and they had six kids. Thirty years later, with all of us grown and out of the house, Mom began to wonder what to do with the rest of her life. So she wrote a letter to Mother Teresa of Calcutta. She asked Mother Teresa if she would accept a woman, who smoked, to work for her with the Sisters of Charity.
Mother Teresa graciously told Mom no. She told Mom she would best serve Jesus by helping and loving her own family. She sent Mother a Christmas prayer. My mom always talks about how much she loves and respects Mother Teresa. She told me "Kelly, Mother Teresa is a modern day saint." She always looks for the good in everyone.
The more I read in books and magazines about the life and accomplishments of this great woman, the more I revere her for her love and compassion for humanity. She was fearless in her 'Walk of Love.'
I read in Time Magazine about Mother Teresa being in the streets of Calcutta, tending to a man who was maggot-infested and dying. As she put her arms around him, he asked her "Why do you do this?" Mother Teresa answered "Because I love you." I wept. This world could be a much better place if only we could love like Mother Teresa.
